Personally, I think GA made a huge mistake. I have not seen any of the numbers involved but with the possible exception of baseball, the dollars invested in the eliminated sports is minimal. I know Pittsburgh is football country, but the cost of running a successful football program is huge and a tremendous burden on Title IX stipulations. The infrastructure and fan support is absolutely not there and perhaps to some degree the two are related. Living 5 hours away, I have only managed to see 2 games, both of which should have been sellouts (RMU and Dayton) and neither were in a "stadium" that only holds less than 2,000. The revenue generated will not cover the cost of running the event much less the scholarships, uniforms, coaches etc involved with running the program.
I think I understand the merit in investing in the basketball..but the wisdom of football still eludes me.
