The more I think about it, the more I relish the thought of an abbreviated 1040 this year similar to what we played for a stretch last year but with tweaks.
Although the 1040 is a substitution pattern, the style of play that accompanies it requires players to spend time on the bench to catch their breath. It becomes vunerable when it becomes predictable. I don't want to use it every game nor only at the start of games. Bring it in at halftime or off a time-out. I attended the LaSalle game last year and although it had the desired effect, the biggest flaw was defensively in the full court press. I blamed it on bad guard play due primarily to lack of depth and speed and yes poor coaching. This year, our guards are more talented, deeper and quicker. McConnell has been playing this way for years. The speed of our big men including Wright is maximized and our lack of height is minimized since those lumbering 6-10 guys typically have trouble getting up and down the court.
Any opinions?
