Let me start this by saying that I think Ron has done a great job turning around a program that didn't seem to be capable of being turned around. For that alone, his tenure here has been a success.
But how much more room does he have before that's it for him?
Obviously he has done or contributed to some great things - the first winning seasons in years, an NIT berth, the signings of guys like Saunders and Clark. This is great stuff, especially considering that he was left with very little on the heels of Nee's departure.
Turnover in players as well as coaches has been troubling, has have some of the in-game coaching that many fans have complained about.
I think that this recruiting class is the most important for his long-term future with the Dukes... he needs these guys to pan out, and more than one transferring from this incoming class will be a disappointment in the talent evaluation of our coaches and/or scouts. If we see this one start to fall apart, I think we may see a parting of ways. Now, I think this class has a higher chance for success than his past ones, so this may all be moot. Still, that could also make it more disappointing if it doesn't work out as we hope.
Lots of coaches that see success are replaced in favor of those who can move things to the "next level." Think Wannstedt's replacing Walt Harris, or Therien's firing and replacement by Bylsma. I don't think it is anything bad about Ron; actually from a certain point of view I think it would be sort of good for DU in a way - we are at a point where we can be a little more picky than we could in years past.
How much room does RE have?
